Tower District

The Tower District in Fresno is more than simply a historical landmark; it’s also a fantastic area to live, work, and play! The Tower District offers it all, from amazing restaurants to the best nightclubs, and everything in between! The neighborhood is also notable for its early twentieth-century residences, many of which have recently been renovated. Many California bungalow and American Craftsman style homes, as well as Spanish Colonial Revival Style architecture, Mediterranean Revival Style architecture, Mission Revival Style architecture, and many Storybook houses designed by Fresno architects Hilliard, Taylor & Wheeler, can be found in the area. The Tower District’s residential design contrasts with Fresno’s newer regions of tract houses and urban sprawl in the north and east. The bright Tower District, which was built in the 1930s as a suburb accessible by Fresno’s (now abandoned) streetcars, is the city’s premier nightlife attraction. The neighborhood is called for the neon-lit Tower Theatre, a national historic site and 1939 Art Deco masterpiece created by S. Many of Hollywood’s most iconic theaters were designed by Charles Lee. The Tower Theatre for the Performing Arts, with a capacity of 761 seats, provides a full schedule of local and national rock, jazz, and comedy events, as well as film screenings. Allow yourself time to appreciate architectural elements such as the lobby’s bas-relief etched-glass panel portraying hunters and backlight-illuminated circular murals painted with neon colors when you come to see a show. Book a table at the adjacent Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater, which is home to the Good Company Players, a team that also performs at the 2nd Space Theatre a block away. Strummer’s, a music theater, restaurant, and club named after The Clash’s late leader Joe Strummer, has a full calendar of events. This pedestrian quarter positively buzzes after dark with all of the live entertainment, restaurants, art galleries, vintage apparel shops, and record stores. Dine at Veni Vidi Vici, a popular restaurant with an Asian and Italian-influenced menu, which is less than a block from the Tower Theatre. Sequoia Brewing Company is a terrific spot to unwind before or after a performance; try a China Peak Pilsner or a General Sherman IPA. Visit the bicycle-themed Spokeasy Public House for more craft beer (and classic arcade games!). Special events transform the entire Tower District into a big celebration several times a year. The Rogue Festival (the city’s annual fringe festival), the Fresno Film Festival, and an annual Mardi Gras parade are just a few of them.
